Stage Of Alcoholism

Each Stage Of Alcoholism Is Set On The Stage Of Life

In his play "As You Like It," William Shakespeare argued that the entire world functions as a symbolic stage. In many respects, people's lives do resemble plays. However, the world of the alcoholic can sometimes resemble a living hell instead. Furthermore, each stage of alcoholism can cause the alcoholic to wish that he were an actor on another planet. However, learning the various phases of alcoholism can be a significant step is getting the proper treatment for the sufferer.

Before familiarizing oneself with the various stages of alcoholism, one must first realize and acknowledge that alcoholism is a sickness that always continues to develop. Nonetheless, the "good news" is that based on various symptoms, one can reliably forecast each stage of alcoholism. These phases include the Early Stage, the Middle Stage, and the Late Stage.

The Early Stage is the first stage of alcoholism. During this phase, the person becomes obsessed with alcohol. This causes him to guzzle drinks instead of sipping them. He also begins to hide alcohol and drink it whenever possible. The increase in the person's alcohol consumption increases his tolerance level, making it more difficult for him to get drunk. The danger of this occurring is that the person may seldom have the appearance of being inebriated. The alcohol during this stage of alcoholism may cause the drinker to forget certain information. However, even more complex effects of a drinking problem may exist in his psyche. The person may decline to discuss his drinking problem and may actually begin feeling at fault about drinking more. It is possible for this stage to continue for a lengthy time period.

The second stage of alcoholism is the Middle Stage. At this juncture, the person begins to have significantly less command over his drinking. In other words, he drinks more and longer. The alcoholic tries to reduce his alcohol consumption or quit completely, but is unable to. Withdrawal symptoms related to alcohol, both serious and slight, start at this stage of alcoholism. Drinking even affects or replaces one's work and leisure endeavours. Alcohol also starts to influence various types of conduct, including:

· Family disturbances

· Loss of job

· Being hospitalized

· Legal difficulties

Alcoholism at this stage not only affects the alcoholic's body and social life, but also his mind. The drinker feels regret for his drinking, but also tries to justify the growing costs of his alcoholism.

The final stage of alcoholism is predictably referred to as the Late Stage. This phase is epitomized by the indicators of alcoholism that are physical. However, remember that "physical" can involve the brain, and not simply the body. It is common for mouth and throat cancer, heart disease, and liver disease to form during this stage of alcoholism. At this stage, intense varieties of withdrawal are also common. In addition, damaged prudence and moral corrosion show that the alcoholic's brain has undergone biological alterations. Furthermore, at this juncture the alcoholic's ability to remember, think abstractly and focus, have been hampered.

Alcoholism has become so prevalent in the U.S., that it annually takes the lives of 5% of the population in the U.S. However, learning each stage of alcoholism can help to prevent you and your loved ones from becoming another statistic.
